The Torah by (Abraham) Abram Krol (1919-2001).
It is 8 1/2 inches by 12 inches and made of bronze with green, blue and white enamel. The letters on the Torah scroll are Aleph Tav which is (very roughly) equivalent to Alpha-Omega and can serve as the name of god in written texts.
Abraham Krol is best known as an engraver and print artist and illustrated many books in addition to his own work. He also worked in mixed media, oils and as our piece shows, bronze and enamel. His works can be found in museums around the world including such prestigious collections as MOMA and the Victoria and Albert.
I’m uncertain of how many enamel pieces he did over his life time but one reliable source estimates 200. I usually avoid the use of ‘rare’ in the description of items preferring unusual or scarce instead. This I feel is a very unusual item, perhaps not unique but definitely on the far end of the curve from ordinary.
It is in excellent condition, museum quality even.
We’re going to offer it here first but in a week or so we’ll also post it in our ebay store where it can be had be the rest of the world.
