WOW!
Vintage jeweled filigree vanity tray or lidded box by Apollo Studios. Once upon a time I would have considered this a candidate for Ed’s House-of-Ugly (those things that are so horrible they’re cool) but it’s grown on me and while not to some people’s taste, I think it’s pretty neat.
Apollo Studios was subsidiary of a larger metals firm and the mark was in use from roughly 1909 to 1922. They specialized in vanity, and desk sets and other metal work. Cigar humidors and lighters, stamp boxes, combs, powder containers, trinket boxes, perfume bottles and postal scales are among the items they produced.
They were contemporaries of the Tiffany Studios (although maybe just a little down market?) and their items were sold at prestigious venues like Ovington’s, “The Gift Shop of Fifth Avenue.” For many years they were located at Fifth Avenue and 39th St. and shared a block with Lord & Taylor. They were even held as a text-book example of how to build advertisements for retail trade and featured in literature of the day by now famous writers.
This lidded tray is an amazing piece with floral lace between two pieces of glass forming the lid. This is surrounded by ormolu filigree, embossed patterned details and glass ‘gems’. The base also features glass gemstones, ornate patterned metal work, has handles on each side and it rests upon four feet.
With the exception of four small missing gems and one faint mark from a bottle of some sort this is in excellent condition. It is about 12 inches in diameter stands 3 1/2 inches tall
$350 and this will also be featured on our ebay store, but we wanted to offer it to you folks first.
