Just this week a retrospective exhibit of the works of Erik Gronborg opened at Portland’s own Museum of Contemporary Craft.
As it happens we have six of his pieces for sale on our Ebay store at the moment too.
Although not dated these are early pieces which probably date to the time when he was the head of the ceramics department at Reed College (from 1965 to 1969) and exhibited twice at the Nationals.
He was born and grew up in Copenhagen, Denmark. Gronborg trained as an electrical engineer and then emigrated to the United States. By 1963 he had obtained both an undergraduate sculpture degree and a Master of Arts from the University of California, Berkeley. Although it’s hard to tell stylistically his early educational influences include Peter Voulkos.
Gronborg’s works of the 1960s and early 1970s were heavily influenced by Pop Art, and historic ceramics. To this he then applied new techniques with an over-gloss of social and/or political symbolism.
Dimensions of each piece and detailed pictures are available by following this link to our Ebay auction of these pieces.
